Review:
When we first about 'Gulaab Gang' and that Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla will be playing antagonists to each other, we could not be more excited. The myth about women-centric movies being niche is a thing of the past - as Cate Blanchett rightly said so in her Oscar acceptance speech. However, we might have had our expectations set too high, because the movie comes as a disappointment after all that hype.

First things first - the movie director Soumik Sen categorically maintains that this movie has nothing to do with Sampat Rai, leader of the women's group Gulaabi Gang - who also have the same uniform of pink sarees and similar weapons in the form of lathis to deal with errant males of their rural society. Ok then, Soumik, if you say so. What we have here instead is Madhuri Dixit running a shelter-house for abused women and teaching them how to kick some butt. In a movie that is so female-centric, it made sense to have a female villain. Enter Juhi Chawla as the power-hungry, despicable politician who stops at nothing to get what she wants.
The movie, for all its airs about depicting women power, becomes a parody of what it initially set out to do. If you are going to intersperse male-bashing with song-and-dance sequences with perfectly choreographed Madhuri moves, the message gets lost somewhere. For a movie that celebrates womanhood, demeaning a man by forcefully making him wear a saree sends out a completely wrong idea - as if being a woman is the most shameful thing.
Madhuri Dixit's performance is par excellence - and any shortcoming is the fault of the writers. Juhi Chawla's role is nothing different from the villainous politician figures we have been seeing in Bollywood since the 50s - just that she is a female. The other actresses are quite brilliant in their unidimensional roles - Divya Jagdale, Tannishta Chatterjee and Priyanka Bose, and get across the idea of women's power across to the viewer.
