Bhoothnath Returns (2014) Full Hindi Movie

Bhoothnath Returns (2014) Review:
As a sequel to ‘Bhoothnath’, ‘Bhoothnath Returns’ follows a similar storyline but with a very strong political undertone this time. Bhoothnath is a friendly ghost who befriends a slum dweller Akhrot (Partho). From a kid’s film, it soon shifts focus towards awakening the whole nation to cast a vote and voice their opinion. Bhoothnath takes upon himself to contest in the elections as a ghost, for nowhere does the election rulebook rule out dead people from contesting for elections.  How Bhoothnath and Akhrot manage to inspire a social change forms the rest of the plot.

What could easily have been an enjoyable kid’s flick has been turned into a preachy 160 minute long lecture. The first half has plenty of enjoyable moments between Partho and Bhoothnath. The way their friendship blossoms is endearing. But the second half takes a very boring turn and the film only sinks deeper after that. Not only preachy, but the film is also uninnovative and clichéd. Election campaigning are extended a little too much. Even though the director has roped in SRK and Ranbir Kapoor for cameos, they fail to compensate for the boredom that sets in post interval. Logic is also questionable at times. Having said that, the director does deserve a special mention for making an actual sequel to the previous film, unlike many other so-called sequels today.

Amitabh Bachchan is brilliant as always, but Partho is the surprise element. It is an immense feat to get noticed alongside Amitabh Bachchan, and Partho almost outshines the legend with his nuanced act. Such confidence and talent at such a young age is rarity. Boman Iran as the anti-hero is top-notch, but it is high time he experiments with roles.
